Meteors over Aotearoa

Last night's possible meteorite landings →

Every meteor tracked by the NZ sky cameras since they started. Each streak is a real path through the sky, measured by two or more cameras at once. Tap a streak to see where it went.

Pick a streak

Tap or click any line on the map. Each one is drawn like a shooting star: the faint tail is where it came from, the bright head is where it burned out.

Brightness uses the astronomers' scale: lower is brighter. −4 is about as bright as Venus. −8 and lower is a true fireball that can light the ground.

Possible meteorite falls

Meteors that were still glowing low down and moving slowly. These are the ones that can leave a rock on the ground.

Meteors each night

Full bar = all meteors tracked. Orange part = bright ones (−2 or brighter). Low nights are usually cloud. The last night may still be filling in.
